GROHMAN BARRELS
It is one of the symbols of factory Łódź. The barrels are part of the gate to the Grohman factory. In fact, these are columns that resemble barrels or spools of thread.
The Grohmans came from the town of Sebnitz near Dresden. They were a family of weavers. Two Grohmans: Traugott and Karol, came to the Kingdom of Poland. They opened a leather factory in Warsaw. Then they moved to Zgierz and in 1827 they opened a cotton factory. But the brothers parted ways and Trougott moved to Łódź in 1843. The unusual gate to the factory was built in 1896. It was designed by Franciszek Chełmiński, the then city architect. The gate resembles the entrance to a medieval castle. The arch is supported by two columns (barrels), and the top is crowned with a toothed gable. Until the 1950s, at the top of the arcade, there was a sculpture resembling an eagle with outstretched wings, forged in iron, today there is no trace of it. The Grohmans were leaders in the Łódź fire brigade, after building the gate, some thought that the columns were water barrels or, as the well-known city legend says - a place where a fortune was hidden.
